A medical transport jet carrying six people, including a child patient and her mother, crashed into a Philadelphia neighborhood shortly after takeoff, igniting a massive fire. Authorities have not confirmed survivors, and fatalities are expected.
Friday night, a medical transport plane carrying six people—including a young patient and her mother— crashed into a Philadelphia neighbourhood, exploding in flames and demolishing many houses.
Operating the Learjet 55, Jet Rescue Air Ambulance said, "We cannot confirm any survivors." Four crew members, plus all six of the passengers, were from Mexico. With a scheduled stop in Missouri, the youngster had been treated in Philadelphia for a life-threatening illness and was on his way home to Tijuana.
Saying deaths were inevitable, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro described the collision as an "awful aviation disaster." At 6:06 p.m., the airplane left Northeast Philadelphia Airport and soon disappeared from radar after rising 1,600 feet.
Before igniting in a fireball close to Roosevelt Mall, a doorbell camera recorded video of the jet descending. Witnesses said they heard a loud noise and then an explosion.
This is the second tragic collision Jet Rescue has had in 15 months. When their aircraft crashed in Mexico in 2023, five crew members perished.
Following Wednesday's airborne collision in Washington, D.C., where an Army helicopter and an American Airlines plane collided killing all on board, the Philadelphia crash takes place.
President Donald Trump noted in a Truth Social post, "So sad to see the jet go down in Philadelphia... More innocent souls died.
While rescue teams evaluate the damage, authorities keep looking.
