GALVESTON, Texas- A man who was being sought in connection with the fatal shooting of a Harris County constable led authorities on a high-speed chase from Houston to Galveston on Tuesday.

Maher Husseini, a deputy with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office since 2021, was shot multiple times while en route to work on Tuesday at approximately 12:30 p.m.
As per Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz, Husseini was halted at a traffic light in his SUV at the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Fondren when a man departed his vehicle, approached the deputy, and started firing.
Shortly after arriving at Ben Taub Hospital, Husseini was declared deceased; he was not in uniform at the time of the incident.
Several shots were discharged at close range by the suspect before he fled the scene, according to witness accounts.
Concerns regarding public safety and the potential for road rage as a motive were raised by the shooting, which took place in a very popular area.

The suspect was described as a man between the ages of 35 and 40 with dark, thinning hair. He was in a charcoal grey Chevrolet Impala and left the scene after the gunshot.
Authorities promptly implemented a manhunt, employing surveillance footage to monitor the vehicle's movements. Around 5:15 p.m., the suspect drove his vehicle into the bay near 81st Street after leading authorities on a chase down Interstate 45 and into Galveston.
Police stated that the suspect made an attempt to escape by swimming, but was ultimately apprehended with the assistance of a marine unit and a police K9.
His injuries, which included wounds from the K9, were sustained during the arrest. Before being filed into custody, the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation.
Local law enforcement agencies and officials have expressed their sorrow in response to the incident. Harris County Constable Mark Herman conveyed his condolences, stating, "We are profoundly saddened by the murder of our deputy on his way to work today." The assault was also condemned by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who made it clear that the suspect would be subjected to the full force of the law.
