Officer Injured, Suspect Fatally Shot in Clear Lake Shores Pursuit

CLEAR LAKE SHORES, Texas - On Tuesday evening, August 8, 2024, a police officer from the Clear Lake Shores Police Department was shot and wounded during a pursuit.

 

 

The officer initiated a pursuit that culminated in a fatal shooting after attempting to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation.

 

The unnamed officer is currently in stable condition at a nearby hospital and is anticipated to recover fully. Clear Lake Shores Police Chief Mark Koonce shared that, "Our thoughts are with him and his family during this difficult time."

 

Reports show that the pursuit commenced at approximately 7 p.m. when the officer attempted to halt a vehicle for a minor traffic violation. The motorist, 32-year-old John Doe, declined to stop and chased the officer through the streets of Clear Lake Shores.

 

As per police chief Koonce, the suspect opened fire at their officer during the chase and struck him in the shoulder. The officer then returned fire to fatally hit the suspect.

 

The pursuit concluded when the suspect's vehicle collided with a tree near FM 2094 and FM 270. The suspect, who was multiple times struck by the officer's gunfire, was declared deceased at the site.

 

"Our officers are trained to handle high-pressure situations, but it's always a tragedy when someone loses their life," emphasized Koonce.  They expect the officer to fully recover and will conduct a complete investigation regarding the incident.

 

The investigation has been aided by the Texas Rangers, as is customary in the case of officer-involved shootings. Additionally, the Clear Lake Shores Police Department is conducting an internal investigation into the incident.

 

"We want to ensure that our officers follow proper protocols and procedures," according to Koonce. "The safety of our community is our top priority."

 

Many residents of Clear Lake Shores have expressed their concern for the injured officer and his family in the wake of the shooting, which has left them feeling rattled.

 

Jane Smith, a resident, expressed her confidence in the police department, stating, "It is a frightening situation." "We know they are doing everything they can to keep us safe."

 

The Clear Lake Shores Police Department encourages anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward as the investigation continues. Additionally, they provide counseling services to officers who the traumatic event may have impacted.

 

"We are a tight-knit community, and we will get through this together," emphasized Koonce. "Our officer is in good spirits and is looking forward to returning to duty as soon as possible."

 

The shooting serves as a reminder of the daily hazards that police officers encounter while safeguarding their communities. The Clear Lake Shores community is united in their support for the men and women who risk their lives to ensure their safety as they lament the loss of the suspect and pray for the recovery of the injured officer.
