This Sunday, Trinity Episcopal Church in Galveston hosted its annual Blessing of the Animals. More than 20 dogs, two cats, and even some reptiles gathered on the church lawn with their owners. The event celebrated the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, and the Rev. Jimmy Abbott blessed each pet, including stuffed animals and photos of those who couldn’t attend. There was live music, treats for the animals, and games for the kids. Attendees also brought donations for the Galveston Island Humane Society, making it a day of blessings, fun, and community spirit.
Galveston had a fun gathering of furry (and scaly!) friends this Sunday when Trinity Episcopal Church hosted its annual Blessing of the Animals. More than 20 dogs, two brave cats, and even some reptiles came with their owners to the church lawn for a special blessing. It was quite the sight—so many paws, tails, and even a flickering tongue or two!
The event celebrated the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, who is the patron saint of animals. St. Francis loved and cared for all animals, and he would have loved this crowd. The Rev. Jimmy Abbott gave each animal a blessing. It didn’t matter if they had feathers, scales, or fur—every animal got a special prayer and a kind word. Even a few stuffed animals and pictures of pets that couldn’t make it to the event were blessed, so no friend was left out!
There was also live music, and it seemed like some of the animals liked it too. Some of the dogs barked along—maybe they were singing or just having fun! On the church lawn, pets enjoyed yummy treats while the kids played games under the big trees.
The event wasn’t just about blessings—it was also about helping. People brought donations for the Galveston Island Humane Society, like pet food, blankets, and toys for animals that need homes. It showed how much the community cares about animals in need.
Overall, it was a wonderful Sunday full of love for both animals and people. As the day ended, and everyone started to leave, there were wagging tails and happy smiles. It wasn’t just a blessing; it was a day to celebrate friendship, fun, and the love we share with our animal friends.
