The long history and vital work of the Galveston-Texas City Pilots come to life in the new documentary “Sentinels of the Port,” premiering at The Grand 1894 Opera House on Saturday at 7 p.m.
At 7 p.m. on Saturday, the Grand 1894 Opera House will host the premiere of "Sentinels of the Port," a documentary about the Galveston-Texas City Pilots' long and important past.
The documentary, which Galveston director J.R. Shaw directed, looks into the lives of the skilled pilots who guide ships through the Galveston Ship Channel, which is narrow and often dangerous. The movie gives an in-depth look at their history, how they've changed over time, and how they work now, showing how important they are to the maritime industry in the area.
Shaw, who is known for telling interesting stories, said that this project was one of the most in-depth ones he had ever worked on. It is hoped that "Sentinels of the Port" will bring attention to the unsung stars of Galveston's ports.
On The Grand's website, you can buy $20 tickets for the opening. Don't miss this chance to learn more about the interesting history of the Galveston-Texas City Pilots.
Mark your calendars! The 2025 Mardi Gras Galveston parade, featuring over 20 events and performances by local krewes, is set for Saturday, February 22.
